Did Nature intend sex to be an act of recreation or procreation?

Pros and cons about sex before marriage, what are the ways of having safe sex, at what age should boys or girls start having sex- there are hundreds of such issues being talked about and there are hundreds of attitudes and opinions about sex. It is a sensitive issue and many cultures do not openly like to discuss it. Sex has been around for as long as mankind and yet it remains one of the most controversial and fascinating issues in most societies.
Nature in her simplicity designed the act of having sex purely for procreation, it is when man started using it as an act of recreation, coupled with morality and ethics that the problems with it started to crop up. This is clearly explained if you take for example the animal kingdom. You don’t see animals or birds mating except in their mating season. They mate when nature calls and their bodies are ready. They don’t deal with issues such as infidelity or cheating or extra marital affairs. (They do have their share of roles and responsibilities in feeding their young, teaching them hunting skills or how to get their food, till the young ones are able to look after themselves.)
It is only when one looks at sex as a tool for enjoyment or anything other than procreation that we find ourselves debating issues such as pros and cons of sex without marriage, the rights and wrongs of sex, or teenage sex, or safe sex!
Just look at that last one there- SAFE SEX. What? I can hear mother nature laugh at that one.
In natures eyes, the consequences of sex were never dangerous or sinful. It was meant to be indulged in for a certain purpose- namely procreation, so if one did conceive, it was just natural. Even our bodies follow nature’s dictates. Most women (if they are tuned in to their bodies) will find that their bodies are naturally most ready for sex in their “fertile period” which is a couple of days after ovulation, about three days in a month.
Look at it this way, if indeed, everyone used or indulged in sex only when they wanted to have children, would the other problems such as extra-marital affairs, teenage pregnancies, infidelity, morality or safe sex even arise? Unwanted or unplanned for pregnancies, rape and prostitution would be non-existent.
Sex and procreation go hand in hand, which is why in society it is considered natural for a couple to have sex when they are married, but sex outside of marriage certainly becomes a point of debate even today. I am not talking here about whether or not children should be born “out of wedlock”, or whether people should get married to have children, or sex as an expression of love or lust, or the use of sex as pure powerful creative energy or as a stress buster, or sex and romance, those are different issues all together, but worth looking at to get our perspective right!

as i see it vibhavari, the sexual drive of humans isn't so unlike the animal kingdom. if other species such as the canine, feline, or bird populations were to come into heat for three days a month twelve months a year, we'd have problems with recreational sex amongst the lower species too.look at rodents. males would come expect a constant supply of ready females for fun and their preponderance for celibacy would be history. boys of every species are always ready to pounce. nature did that for survival. i agree that the human animal is a sexual animal but ought not to be punished severely for transgressing natural law. the truth is, females of the human species had to be designed differently that other mammals. our infant mortality rate was enormous before we became civilized. once, long ago we were easy prey to our environment. death was a reality faced daily. we became aggressive and survived against all odds... and mated often! many indigenous stone age tribes of the americas didn't name their children till the age of three or four years because of infant mortality. our ancestors lost more children than those who reached adulthood or near adulthood. it is a safeguard installed by nature to ensure we survive as a species. sex is healthy, a need. sex can damage the mind for some but so don't automobiles and money. betrayal of the heart and pornography are another thing altogether. perhaps you can explore that and possible causes. the standard moral beliefs and taboos present in most every society are as archaic and foolish now as when they were put into effect. religious oppressors the world over controlled whole populations of superstition peoples and filled them with guilt and shame for a very natural drive indeed. it's always a control issue... good write, keep it up
Hi Vibhavari, pleasure is all mine. i'll be watching you!(: we should all support each others efforts here on the Hub, we as hubbers may be on different sides of the fence at times but that is what we thrive on as humans,is it not? our differences... your friend, greg ~-(:
I strongly believe sex is for procreation and not recreation.
Lowest (basic) needs of men are food, drinks and shelter. Men can't do without them.
Sex on the contrary is kind of optional for the survival of an individual.
No men have ever died for not having sex.
However, it's for the survival of the species.
To maintain the population (not even increasing it unnecessarily).
Even animal without extra sense confine it to their procreation.
Human with extra sense violated nature's law.
Wastage of energy is the violation of nature's law.
Seminal fluid with millions of sperm intended of fertilization is wasted!
Men who succumbed to carnal desires can never rise to spiritual (sorry I don't mean religion here) and moral heights.
Most people will disagree with this but I totally agree. Sex is meant for procreation in its ultimate sense which goes along with nature and life on earth as general. Humans have perverted the meaning and use of sex, and now we experience all those negative aspects such as rape, abuse, hurt, pain, disease, out of marriage, etc. which are associate with sex for recreation. Another thing worth mentioning is that sex performed in pure manner with loving partner to create life is actually rewarding. Where as sex for recreation can never satisfy, and ppl constantly want more and never get enough.

I agree, sex was designed for procreation although we abuse of it. Great Hub.
